How to Choose Graphics for Your Logo—And What Not to Use

Big Max’s Guide to Smart, Strategic Branding

You’ve got your business name, a mission you believe in, and a big vision. Now it’s time to create a logo that reflects all of that—and more. But here’s the thing: choosing the right graphic for your logo isn’t as easy as dropping a pretty icon into Canva and calling it a day.

Your logo isn’t just a placeholder. It’s the face of your brand, and first impressions matter.

Here’s how to choose a logo graphic that works, plus a few things you’ll want to avoid at all costs.

What to Look For in Logo Graphics

1. Relevance to Your Brand
Your graphic should reflect what you do or how you want people to feel about your brand. A boutique bakery might lean into a whimsical whisk or floral illustration; a law firm, not so much.

2. Simplicity Wins
Think timeless, not trendy. Your graphic should be clean, easy to identify at a glance, and scalable (more on that below). Less is usually more.

3. Versatility Is Key
A strong logo works on a website header, social media profile, product packaging, or printed material. Make sure your graphic looks good, large and small, in color and black & white.

4. Custom Is Always Better
Where possible, invest in a custom illustration or icon that’s uniquely yours. If that’s not an option yet, choose graphics that can be modified and personalized to avoid that “template” look.

5. Cohesive With Typography
Your graphic and typeface need to work together, not compete. Look for balance—visually and stylistically.

What Not to Use in Your Logo

1. Stock Icons Everyone Has Seen
If you found it on the first page of Canva or a free icon site, chances are a dozen other businesses are using it too. That doesn’t build trust or recognition.

2. Too Much Detail
Logos with tiny, intricate details can look muddy when scaled down. Save the artistic flair for other design assets—your logo needs to be crisp and readable.

3. Clip Art or Emojis
They might be cute, but they don’t communicate professionalism. You want your logo to say “established brand,” not “group project.”

4. Photos or Gradients
While beautiful in other contexts, photos and complex gradients don’t scale well for logos. Flat, simple shapes are best for consistent branding.

5. Trendy Graphics That Will Date Fast
That ultra-minimal squiggle or Y2K glitter blob might be all over Instagram today, but will it still feel fresh in five years? Choose longevity over trends.

Bonus Tip: Test It at Different Sizes

Before you commit, print it out small. Shrink it down to favicon size. Put it over a dark background. If your logo still looks good in all formats, you’re on the right track.
